Online Tasting.

Background Story:

THE MISUNDERSTOOD GREAT: German riesling, specifically
those that come from the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region,
which is known to be one of the few vinicultural
erogenous zones on earth. Not only you will be tasting
pure terroir, but you will also be tasting deep tradition and history.

THE NOBLE & NEWLY REBORN: Hungary. Tokaj, to be exact.
This is the area that once used to produce “Vinum regum
rex vinorum” (the wine of kings, the king of wines), and
then temporarily interrupted (1944-1989) by the communist
regime, and now again produces exceptional noble sweet
wines, the Tokaj Aszu. The history behind the craft of
making this sweet noble wines is lengthy and predates
Germany as well as Sauternes

Riesling"
OCTOBER TASTING: Mosel-Saar-Ruwer’s Riesling
Thursday October 27, 2005

The more I think about how we should go about
experimenting with German rieslings, the more I realize
there is no one best approach. There are so many angles:
different ripeness levels (from Kabinett to TBA),
winemaking differences (more than one producers own
subplots of the same vineyard), vineyard differences
(terroir), and of course vintage difference. So let’s
keep it simple and stick to one method that combines
together horizontal and level tasting, or “horizon level”.

********************************************************

HOW IT GOES. The idea is to taste (at least) 2 wines of
different ripeness levels from one vintage, made by one
producer, from one vineyard. Because this is not a dessert
wine tasting, let’s limit ourselves to these three levels
(from less ripe to more ripe): kabinett, spatlese, and
auslese.

********************************************************

5 BASIC RULES that I’d like to impose in order to limit incoherence in our postings:
1. Still Riesling (no sparkling Sekt) from Mosel-Saar-Ruwer
2. Within these 3 ripeness levels only: Kabinett, Spatlese and Auslese
3. One producer (I will post a list of reliable producers later)
4. One vintage (try to avoid 2000…bad year), and
5. One vineyard

Share
NOT ONLY THAT…! Now, those of us who would like to enjoy
just a bottle of riesling for good fun certainly shouldn’t
feel left out! Just follow the basic rules above and
let’s exchange notes!!! All in good fun and learning!
